Stuart Park

One day we decided to go check out Gilcrease Museum again. It had been several years since we have visited Gilcrease, I think it was when Makenzie had some of her art shown at the museum. Anyway, it's been too long so we went on homeschoolers day because homeschool families get in for free! We parked in the North parking lot and started walking and saw Stuart Park and decided to go explore. We never made it into the museum because this park was so beautiful and we got a little geocaching in while we were enjoying the beautiful park and of course I took a bunch of photos!

Woolaroc 2010

Our homeschool group planned a field trip to Woolaroc! Woolaroc was established in 1925 as the ranch retreat of oilman Frank Phillips. The ranch is a 3,700 acre wildlife preserve.
The mountain men just happened to be camping out so we visited them and learned so many interesting things from them. A couple of things we learned were how to shoot a rifle and how to throw a tomahawk. Then, we went on to the museum, had a picnic lunch and explored the property. It was a BEAUTIFUL day and we enjoyed spending time with Grammy, Devin, Paige and Brook (cousins).

It's Either Her or Me review and giveaway

The Book:

It’s Either Her or Me by Ellie Slott Fisher is a must read if you are a mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, or sister-in-law. This book contains advice for mother-in-laws, for daughter-in-laws, for girlfriends, and even for sister-in-laws about when you should give your opinion and when you shouldn't. It tells why some mother-in-laws come across as overbearing, and how to keep from doing that. It guides wives and girlfriends in dealing with jealous sisters and other difficult family members. This book can help you learn how to cope with difficult situations and not only overcome them but to thrive and build better relationships with your in laws.

My opinion:
It's a great book for anyone that has in laws. I didn't relate to most of the issues because I love my in laws and we all get along. I do have friends that have MAJOR issues with their mother in laws and sister in laws so I see how this book could help them. I'm actually giving my copy to a dear friend that REALLY needs to read this book!

Recommendation:
Yes, I highly recommend this book it's a great read and I laughed a lot over many of the situations. I do think this book will help me when my children grow up, get married and I become a mother in law. Hopefully I will be the type of mother in law that everyone wants and needs in their life and I'm sure this book has helped me.

Ewww, growing bacteria for science

Bacteria are microorganisms that grow everywhere. We can collect and grow them in specially prepared petri dishes. We bought petri dishes at Classroom Corner they didn't have the agar for the dishes so I just made my own.

Agar recipe that I used

1 pack Knox gelatin
3/4 cup of boiling water
1 bouillon cube

then pour into the sterile petri dishes and let set in the fridge for a little while.

After the petri dishes were ready we just used a cotton swab to go around the house and rub it on something and then gently rubbed it on the agar. After 2 days nothing was growing but on day 3 we started seeing bacteria begin to grow and at day 6 it was disgusting and day 9 the whole dish was full. Very gross but educational and the kids think more about germs and what could possible be growing on all surfaces around our house and out in public.

Easter Story Cookies

Easter Story Cookies

To be made the evening before Easter

  • 1cup whole pecans
  • 1tsp vinegar
  • 3 egg whites
  • pinch salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • zipper baggie
  • wooden spoon
  • tape
  • Bible

Preheat oven to 300 degrees (this is important, don't wait till you're half done with the recipe!)

Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was Beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1tsp vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar.

Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16.

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3.

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66.

GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.

Swimming Creatures of the 5th day

For science this year we are using an Apologia book called Swimming Creatures of the Fifth day and it's a fascinating book. My kids love anything under the ocean and they want to know all about it so my mom found this really cool video by David Gallo and it's all underwater footage and it's AMAZING! We watched it over and over because the kids were fascinated!
